KATHMANDU, JUL 08 - Nepal lost their second and final warm-up match of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 20 runs under Duckworth/Lewis method at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
In a match that was reduced to 18-over-a-side due to rain interruption, Nepal were restricted to 84-7 after yet another dismal batting display. The UAE were 81-2 in 14 overs before the rain intervened and by that time they were 20 runs ahead of Nepal.
Faizan Asif made 24 and Amjad Ali scored 23 not out for the UAE, while Umair Ali chipped in 16 unbeaten runs. Jitendra Mukhiya and Sagar Pun picked up a wicket each for Nepal.
Earlier, Nepal’s top order flopped once again and it was left all on Sharad Vesawkar to save them from an embarrassment. At a time when all Nepali batsmen flopped, Vesawkar scored an impressive 38 not out off 37 balls that included two fours and a six.
No 3 batsman Gyanendra Malla and No 8 Pradeep Airee were the next best scorers with 13 runs apiece. Sompal Kami was unbeaten on seven. Subash Khakurel (one), Sagar Pun (one), skipper Paras Khadka (five), Rajesh Pulami Magar (one) and Binod Bhandari (duck) lost their wickets cheaply.
Manjula Guruge returned the figures of 3-12 from four overs for the UAE, while Mohammad Shahzad claimed two wickets.
Nepal will now begin their World Twenty20 Qualifiers campaign with a match against the United States of America at the same venue on Friday. The Qualifiers begins from Thursday. Nepal are pitted in Group ‘A’ which also features Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong, Namibia and Jersey.
The Qualifiers will send the two group winners to the 2016 World Twenty20 to be held in India, while the second, third and fourth placed teams will vie for the remaining four spots through the playoffs.
