KATHMANDU, JUL 11 - The Kathmandu-basedinternational community has commended the progress in the constitution drafting process and the efforts shown by the political parties to finalise the constitution in the near future.
They expressed hope that Nepal’s political leaders will honour their commitments to fundamental human rights, gender equality and inclusiveness in the new constitution in line with the international laws.
A statement issued by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Jamie McGoldrick, on behalf of the international community , said the political parties have a chance to build momentum through a public consultation process that gives all the citizens an opportunity to express their views and to build common ownership of the constitution draft.
Since the second Constituent Assembly elections, under the banner of International Development Partners Group, the Kathmandu-based ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions meet regularly at the UN Office to assess the political and constitutional developments in Nepal.
The meeting is coordinated and presided over by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator where ambassadors and representatives from India, China, the United States, European Union, Germany and other countries participate every month.
In Thursday's meeting, diplomatic community members discussed the political and constitutional developments since the 16-point political deal was signed on June 8.
"The accomplishment of a democratic and inclusive constitution, providing for the interests, equity and rights of women and men from all sections of Nepali society would build on the positive achievements of past agreements," the statement read.
With this fundamental and guiding document, the political leaderships have a historic opportunity to inspire a peaceful, united, inclusive and democratic future of Nepal, it added.
