NEW DELHI, JUL 12 - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nepali Embassy in New Delhi have not been officially informed about the top brass political leaders’ proposed visit to New Delhi until Sunday noon. Officials at the embassy said that the ‘Delhi invited the Nepali leaders at their own requests.’
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman and Former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is scheduled to arrive here in Delhi on Tuesday. Also, CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress’s Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Poudel too are preparing to arrive in Delhi soon.
Observers have dubbed the proposed visits of Nepali leaders as the continuation of the old tradition of inviting Nepali leaders with coordination between Indian External Affairs Ministry and Indian Embassy of Kathmandu.
Though Deep Kumar Upadhyay was appointed as the Nepali ambassador to New Delhi three months ago, the custom of Indian establishment to issue invitation and finalise the schedule of visits by disregarding the diplomatic agency.
“The Indian External Ministry has hinted us that the invitations were extended at the repeated requests from Nepali politicians themselves,” said a senior official at Nepali embassy, “It appears that even Nepali Foreign Ministry at Kathmandu is unaware about the schedule and list of this visits.”
A senior official at Indian External Affairs Ministry that looks after Nepal affairs said they were preparing to invite leaders of major political parties of Nepal. However, he gave a clue that the requests for invitations were solicited by Nepali leaders themselves.
Meanwhile, experts have remarked that this ‘agenda-less’ Delhi visits of Nepali politics could be controversial, especially at this time when discussions on the first draft of the new constitution are underway and Constitution Assembly is repeatedly urging lawmakers to visit their respective constituencies to garner the public opinion.
Nepali ambassador to New Delhi Deep Kumar Upadhyay said the Nepali leaders visiting Delhi should discharge their duties by sticking to the diplomatic norms. “The visits of former Prime Ministers at the invitation of Indian government would not generate significant problems,” he added.
