KATHMANDU, JUN 21 - The Annual General Meeting of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has concluded on Saturday setting November 6 and 7 date for its elections in Bhairahawa.
The AGM, which was called in response to a pressure from the International Cricket Council (I
CC) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has also endorsed statute amendment proposal. The endorsement comes just few days before the four-year tenure of the current committee comes to an end.
“We will take an approval from the National Sports Council for statute amendment and if the sports governing body rejects it, we will go into the elections according to the old statute,” CAN Acting President Deepak Koirala told reporters on Saturday.
The cricket governing body has also set an October 2 deadline to the district associations for holding general assembly.
Four years back, CAN elections in Chitwan had formed a new committee under President Tanka Aangbuhang. But CAN plunged into crisis last year after 10 of its members including Aangbuhang and general secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel were charged for corruption. The alleged members have already stepped aside until the case reaches its conclusion.
Acting General Secretary Uttam Karmacharya heads the five-member statute amendment committee that also includes acting treasurer Shailesh Kumar Chaudhary, Suresh Lal Shrestha, Pradeep Majgaiya and Hari Regmi. The AGM on Saturday approved the report from the president and general secretary apart from a budget of Rs 150.6 million prepared by Chaudhary.
The ICC and ACC had halted its grant for Nepal after CAN failed to hold the AGM. “We will soon send the report of the AGM and hopefully recover the grants from the international body that has been halted,” said Koirala. However, the governing bodies have set deadline to submit the report until Sunday.
No decision on coach’s contract
The Annual General Assembly (AGM) of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has failed to make decision over the extension of national team coach Pubudu Dassanayake that expires on July 15. Dassanayake was hired for a one-year contract by the government last year after CAN ran into financial crisis. But with less than one month remaining in Dassanayake’s stay, uncertainty still hangs overs his stay.
“Asian Cricket Council will stop providing us grant from this December and we can keep him until that time. But we want to discuss over the issue with the government first. If the government is ready to give an extension, we can keep him for long,” said CAN Acting President Deepak Koirala on Saturday. The AGM also concluded without deciding on the working tenure for Chief Executive Officer and Finance Administrator. While CEO Bhawana Ghimire was given a three-month extension, Finance Manager Prakash Maharjan had  already resigned soon after his contract expired two months ago.
“The CEO still has one month left at the office. We are thinking of giving her continuity. We will probably address about the issue in another meeting,” he said.
