18 June, Kathmandu : Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has said the constitution drafting task should be advanced through the ‘double fast track’.
The Prime Minister expressed this view in a meeting with a delegation of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (Nefin) that had gone to the PM’s official residence at Baluwatar to hand him a memorandum this morning.
“Other people have mentioned ‘fast track’, but I say ‘double fast track’ as fast track alone would not suffice,” he said.
The Prime Minister further said, “The constitution needs to be made at the earliest. The parties are anxious. I am not sitting on it. Bring the constitution and I will relinquish power.”
On the occasion, PM Koirala also explained about the ‘fast track’, adding the process can be shortened but should not be overridden. He made it clear that the time for seeking the people’s feedback on the draft constitution could, however, be shortened without infringing the process.
Prime Minister Koirala said the agreement reached among the four parties has only resulted in the outline of the constitution, adding the people would not be deprived of their rights to discuss on the issues of the constitution.
In the meeting with the Nefin delegation, the Prime Minister said the rights of the indigenous nationalities would be further protected in the new constitution. Making it clear that the identity, culture, costumes, language and religious freedom of all, including the indigenous nationalities, would be guaranteed, PM Koirala said, “The country will go for federalism; the rights and privileges enjoyed by the indigenous nationalities so far would not be taken away. I will not go back from my words that I have spoken in my capacity as the Prime Minister and the Nepali Congress president.”
The delegation led by Nefin president and CA member Nagendra Kumal handed in a memorandum to the Prime Minister calling for the protection of the rights and privileges of the indigenous nationalities in the new constitution. RSS
