LAMJUNG, JUN 15 - A single woman, Moti Tamang, 75, of Budhikot at Gaunda-5 in the district is beaming with happiness that her house which had been destroyed by the Great Earthquake has finally been rebuilt.
“After my old house was razed to the ground by the earthquake, I had lost all hopes of ever building a new house in my lifetime. But now that my house has been built, I will spend my remaining life here,” Tamang, whose husband died two years ago, said from the doorsteps of her new house. “I am thankful to the good people who built this house for me,” she said, referring to a team of volunteers mobilised by CPN-UML party who constructed her new house out of timber and corrugated zinc sheets salvaged from her destroyed house.
Not only Tamang, Latheman Gurung of Katheswara in ward no 6 has braced himself to live through the monsoon season in the shack built by volunteers deployed by CPN-UML to help in reconstruction efforts across the country. Santa Gurung of the same area also said he has shifted to the new shack built by UML activists.
Another local Ganesh Gurung said the UML volunteers also built a house for him after his house was also destroyed in the earthquake, and that he only had to
purchase construction materials worth Rs 150,000 for the purpose.
“I had built a two-storey house of mud and stones, but it was levelled to the ground by the earthquake. Now my new house is made of timber and zinc sheets, and looks very strong,” he added.
“Our volunteers have cleared debris of houses and buildings and built temporary shelters for victims in Gaunda of constituency no 1 and in Parewadanda and Sundar Bazaar of constituency no 2 of Lamjung ,” CPN-UML Chairman Dhananjay Dawadi said. “Our mission is to continue to help people rebuild their homes and lives.”
UML lawmaker Jamindra Ghale said he and his team constructed more than 70 shelters for victims in Gaunda, Katheswara, Haun, Simalgaun and Budhikot and one temporary shack for Yashodha Primary School. Similarly, more than 100 temporary shelters have been built by UML volunteers in Parewadanda, Sundar Bazar and Okhlepani of Duradanda, UML political coordinator Dr Bhisma Adhikari said.
“Lawmaker Tuka Hamal was himself involved in building shelters for Kumal community and even the house of Parewadanda village president of Nepali Congress Bishnu Sedhai,” he said, adding that UML volunteers also helped build a five-room building for Manakamana School.
